Plot summary
In August 1500, Andrea Orsini serves Cesare Borgia as a soldier. A minor nobleman skilled with the brush as well as the sword, he is chosen to arrange a marriage for Borgia's widowed sister with Alfonso d'Este, son of the Duke of Ferrara. The task makes an enemy of Don Esteban Ramirez, a rival mercenary captain. In Venice, where Andrea sells paintings to cover his expenses, he meets Camilla Verano, the wife of Count Marc Antonio Varano, ruler of Citta del Monte, and gives her a painting. An assassin attacks him there, and Andrea takes the man, Mario Belli, into his service.
