Sophia Loren
Biography
Sophia Loren is an Italian actress whose career has stretched across more than seventy years. Born in Rome in 1934, she began appearing in films at sixteen after beauty pageant success led her to take acting classes. Minor early roles preceded a five-picture contract with Paramount, which launched her international stardom in films such as The Pride and the Passion (1957), Houseboat (1958), and It Started in Naples (1960). Her work with Vittorio De Sica in Two Women (1960) brought the Academy Award for Best Actress, a first for a performance not in English. Loren earned the David di Donatello Award for Best Actress seven times, including for Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow (1963) and A Special Day (1977), and received an Academy Honorary Award in 1991. In 1999, the American Film Institute ranked her among American cinema's great female stars. Later credits include Ready to Wear (1994), Grumpier Old Men (1995), and Nine (2009).

A role that slipped away
In 1981, Sophia Loren was offered the part of Alexis Carrington on the television series Dynasty, but she declined the role.
About the name
Loren's professional name was changed to Sophia Loren by Carlo Ponti, a twist on the name of Swedish actress Märta Torén suggested by Goffredo Lombardo.

As Sofia Lazzaro, Sophia Loren was 16 when she had an uncredited extra role in Quo Vadis, Mervyn LeRoy's 1951 film. She also enrolled at the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Italy's national film school.
First role
Loren's first film roles were small, uncredited parts in Hearts at Sea and The Vow, obtained through her acting school instructor Pino Serpe.
Big break
After she played the lead in Two Nights with Cleopatra in 1953, Loren's breakthrough role came in The Gold of Naples in 1954, which Vittorio De Sica directed.
