Marc Lawrence

Biography

Known for playing gangsters and other underworld figures, Marc Lawrence was an American actor and director whose film, television, and stage work spanned more than two hundred productions between 1932 and 2002. Born in New York City, he studied at the City College of New York and received a scholarship to the repertory theater run by Eva Le Gallienne, appearing in Group Theatre productions. His film debut came in 1933, and his brooding looks and New York accent made him a natural for heavies. He played gangsters in the James Bond films Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and The Man with the Golden Gun (1974), and a henchman opposite Laurence Olivier in Marathon Man (1976). Later roles included an elderly motel owner in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) and a vice president in Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). He also directed Nightmare in the Sun (1965) and Pigs (1973), and appeared in Star Trek episodes. He died in 2005.

Early training
In 1930, Lawrence got a two-year scholarship to a repertory theater run by Eva Le Gallienne. There he became friends with John Garfield and acted alongside him in Group Theatre productions.
Behind the camera
Lawrence turned to directing as well, with credits on the films Nightmare in the Sun and Pigs and on episodes of television series including Lawman, The Roaring 20's, 77 Sunset Strip and Maverick.

In 1991 Lawrence's autobiography, Long Time No See: Confessions of a Hollywood Gangster, was published. The Beautiful and the Profane, a novel about him, appeared in 2002.
