Frank Puglia
Biography
Frank Puglia was an Italian actor born in Linguaglossa, Sicily, who began his career as a teenager on the stage in Italian operas before emigrating to the United States in 1907. In New York City he took work in a laundry, then joined an Italian language theater company, where D. W. Griffith spotted him. Griffith went on to use him in more than 150 films, and Puglia became a familiar presence in character parts, typically playing ethnic types; he said he taught himself English from newspapers. His many screen credits included Jungle Book (1942), and he was first cast as the undertaker Bonasera in The Godfather (1972), taking part in Marlon Brando's screen test before another actor was given the part. He died in 1975.
