Plot summary
Kitty Foyle, a young Irish American saleswoman, faces a decision: marry her fiancé, the poor doctor Mark, or leave for South America with Wyn Strafford, a married man she has loved for years. The story turns back to her youth in Philadelphia, where she gapes at the wealthy families parading ahead of their annual Assembly Ball. Wynnewood Strafford VI, the heir of a wealthy Main Line household, is an acquaintance of her father. He offers her a secretarial job at his new magazine, and the two fall in love; when the magazine folds, he cannot defy his family's expectations. After her father's death, Kitty moves to New York City and works for Delphine Detaille. There she sets off the burglar alarm by mistake, pretends to faint, and meets Dr. Mark Eisen.
