Plot summary
Stuart Bailey is a private detective. Ralph Johnson, a politician with money, asks him to find out about the past of his wife, who has gone missing. Bailey traces her to a dancer who used the name Jane Breeger, and to Buster Buffin, a nightclub entertainer who left her Oregon home town with her. Buffin says she took the name Janie Joy and went to college at UCLA. Then Norma Shannon appears, asking for her sister Jane, and tells Bailey that the woman in his photograph is not her sister. Bailey also learns that the wife used papers taken from a girlfriend to get into college, and that $40,000 was stolen from a club run by a man called Keller.
