Plot summary
Johnny O'Hara, a young man from the old neighborhood, is charged in the shooting death of his boss, Bill Sheffield. Two people robbed and shot Sheffield, and a witness saw the killing from a distance. Police trace the getaway car to Johnny, who flees when detectives come to question him, saying he feared thugs were after him. Detective Vincent Ricks and District Attorney Louis Barra tell him the murder weapon was his too; Johnny says car and gun were stolen. Johnny's parents, unable to pay, ask James Curtayne, a former New York district attorney whose practice was lost to drink, to defend their son, and he agrees. Curtayne is a widower, and Ginny, his daughter, has put off her wedding to Jeff for two years to keep him sober.
