Plot summary
Lewis Venable, a New York publisher, travels to Venice to obtain the love letters that poet Jeffrey Ashton wrote to Juliana Bordereau. A poet, Charles Russell, tells him Juliana is still alive at 105. Lewis takes the name William Burton and lodges in her house, where her great-niece Tina receives him with suspicion. Juliana needs money and accepts gold for his stay. Six weeks pass without the letters. Late one night Lewis hears piano music and finds Tina at the piano, her hair loose, addressing him as Jeffrey. Father Rinaldo warns him to leave before something bad happens, but Lewis remains determined to get the letters, whatever the cost to Tina.

- On The Lost Moment, Susan Hayward and director Martin Gabel quarreled over his interruptions of her line readings; after warning him to stop, she reportedly threw a lamp at him. Gabel never directed another motion picture.
- Leonardo Bercovici wrote the script in 1946 for Charles Feldman, and Walter Wanger bought it in January 1947 for a reported $200,000, though no money actually changed hands: Wanger traded a scenario called The Washington Flyer for it.
- Wanger described the character James Aspern as a combination of Shelley, Keats and Byron, and renamed him Ashton to avoid "exploitation of the Bayer product."
