Plot summary
It is the summer of 1943. The German army is moving to occupy much of Italy after the fall of the Fascist government, and the hill town of Santa Vittoria, which earns its living from wine, learns that the occupation forces intend to seize most of it. The townspeople organize under Italo Bombolini, whom the town's pro-Mussolini politicians had installed as mayor only days earlier, hoping to turn the people's anger aside, and whom everyone, his wife Rosa included, had taken for a buffoon. Together the villagers seal a million bottles inside the galleries of an old Roman cave before a German detachment under Captain Sepp Von Prum reaches the town. The Germans plan to confiscate most of the bottles left out for them to find.
