Biography

Cecil Kellaway was a South African-born character actor who started on the stage in Cape Town and later spent many years in Australia. From 1921 he worked for J. C. Williamson Ltd, appearing for sixteen years in its musical comedies and becoming known there for his role as a comic father in A Night Out. He made his screen debut in the Australian comedy The Hayseeds (1933) and wrote the story for It Isn't Done (1937), after which RKO Pictures signed him. In Hollywood his small early parts gave way to better ones, among them Cathy's father in Wuthering Heights (1939) and roles in I Married a Witch (1942), The Postman Always Rings Twice (1946) and Harvey (1950). He received two Academy Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor, for The Luck of the Irish (1948) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967). Later films included The Shaggy Dog (1959), Hush... Hush, Sweet Charlotte (1964) and Fitzwilly (1967).
