Biography

Joan Fontaine was a British-American actress whose screen career stretched across five decades and more than 45 films. Born in Tokyo to English parents and brought up in California, she joined RKO Pictures in 1935 and had small parts in Quality Street and Gunga Din (1939). Rebecca (1940), directed by Alfred Hitchcock, brought the first of her three Best Actress nominations. She won that prize a year later for Hitchcock's Suspicion (1941), and The Constant Nymph (1943) earned her a third nomination. Dramas filled the 1940s, among them Letter from an Unknown Woman (1948), and she co-produced the comedy You Gotta Stay Happy (1948) for Rampart Productions. After Ivanhoe (1952) her film work thinned and she shifted toward the stage, radio and television, with Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (1961) among her later pictures. Her final theatrical film was The Witches (1966). Her memoir, No Bed of Roses, appeared in 1978, and she kept acting until 1994.
