Plot summary
In Bombay, in British-ruled India, two jewel thieves work separately at the outbreak of fighting in Asia in the Second World War. Gerald Meldrick passes himself off as a detective for Lloyd's of London, and Anya von Duren passes herself off as a baroness. Neither sees through the other's false identity when they meet. Both are after the Star of Asia, a diamond of great value that belongs to the aging Duchess of Beltravers and is set to go on public display at a social function. Police Inspector Cressney has charge of the jewel's security. Gerald is curious about the woman he has met and begins looking into her background.
