Plot summary
Karla Zachanassian grew up in Güllen and was seventeen when Serge Miller, a local shopkeeper, got her pregnant. He denied the child was his at the trial and arranged for two men to say they had slept with her, and the town drove her out. Twenty years later she returns a millionaire. The village has been in economic depression since its factory closed, and the townspeople welcome her, counting on her money to revive it. At a reception in her honor she offers two million dollars, half for the town and half divided among the population, on the condition that Serge Miller be put to death. The townspeople are indignant, yet they begin taking goods from Serge's shop on credit.

Bernhard Wicki's film changes the ending of Friedrich Dürrenmatt's original play: Anthony Quinn's Serge Miller has his life spared, while in the play the character, named Alfred Ill, is killed.- The film's fictional Central European village of Güllen was built on the backlots of Cinecittà Studios in Rome, with the exteriors shot on location in the town of Capranica.
