Plot summary
Tom Winters, a lawyer at the State Department, has lived apart from his wife and their three children, David, Elizabeth, and Robert. After his wife dies, he returns from Europe and takes the children to Washington, though they would rather remain near their mother's wealthy parents and their aunt Carolyn in the countryside. At a Boston Symphony concert, Robert interrupts the music with a harmonica, and Cinzia, the conductor's daughter, laughs. Robert slips away afterward, and Cinzia, who has quarreled with her father, finds him and brings him back to Tom, who hires her to look after the children. The house Tom intends for the family in the country is destroyed, and they take up life on a leaky, neglected houseboat.
