David Cross

Biography

The American comedian, actor and writer David Cross started performing stand-up at around 17 and won a Primetime Emmy Award in 1993 for his writing on The Ben Stiller Show. With Bob Odenkirk he co-created the HBO sketch series Mr. Show with Bob and David, which ran from 1995 to 1998 and brought him three Primetime Emmy nominations. He is known for playing Tobias Fünke on Arrested Development, a part that earned him a Satellite Award nod and three Screen Actors Guild ensemble nominations. His film work includes the role of Ian Hawke across three Alvin and the Chipmunks movies, and voice parts in Curious George, Battle for Terra, Megamind, Next Gen and the Kung Fu Panda franchise. He was the star and creator of The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret, a black comedy series, and he made his directing debut with Hits. He also released comedy specials and albums, earning Grammy nominations for his stand-up records.

Behind the camera
Cross's directorial debut, Hits, premiered at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, and he chose to sell the film over BitTorrent rather than to distributors, making it the first feature film distributed that way.

Cross started doing stand-up comedy when he was about 17. He moved to New York City the day after graduating from Northside High School in Atlanta.

Cross enrolled at Emerson College in Boston, dropped out after a semester, and joined the college sketch group This is Pathetic, where he met John Ennis.

Cross started his professional television career writing for The Ben Stiller Show. The series brought him on near the end of its run, and he sometimes showed up briefly in the sketches.
