Plot summary
Chicago IRS agent Harold Crick keeps every day on a rigid schedule, with few friends besides his co-worker Dave. He is assigned to audit Ana Pascal, a baker who has withheld her taxes on purpose. Around that time a woman's voice starts narrating his life, describing his actions and his private thoughts. When his wristwatch stops and he resets it by a passerby's clock, the voice says that action will one day cause his death. A psychiatrist tells him to consult a literary expert, so Harold brings his case to literature professor Jules Hilbert.

- The film's chief characters are named after famous scientists or scientifically influential artists, Crick, Pascal, Eiffel, Escher and David Hilbert, and when Dr. Hilbert tells Harold he has devised a series of 23 questions to investigate the narrator, it is a playful reference to Hilbert's 23 problems.
