Plot summary

Po helps his fathers, Li Shan and Mr. Ping, open their new restaurant, and Master Shifu tells him he is to lead the Valley of Peace, which means giving up the title of Dragon Warrior and choosing a successor. Po puts off the choice, unwilling to lose his place. He catches a corsac fox bandit named Zhen stealing ancient weapons from the Jade Palace and sends her to prison. Mine workers report that Tai Lung has returned and wrecked a quarry, and Zhen says a sorceress called The Chameleon, able to take any animal's shape and copy kung fu skills by touch, was behind it. Po and Zhen head for Juniper City to stop her, while his worried fathers follow.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • Kung Fu Panda 4 was first planned as a live-action/animated hybrid, with The Chameleon (then called The Collector) and Zhen written as humans; co-director Stephanie Ma Stine said the idea was eventually scrapped.
  • The Furious Five were not originally going to appear, co-director Stephanie Ma Stine said, because of the cost of the original actors, especially Angelina Jolie as Tigress; the marketing department then told the filmmakers to include them in a cameo.
  • Director Mike Mitchell said he was a fan of Ian McShane's work, and had McShane refused to return as Tai Lung there was no alternate plan for the story, because the filmmakers had locked in Tai Lung's return.
  • Tenacious D recorded a cover of Britney Spears' "...Baby One More Time" that is featured in the end credits of Kung Fu Panda 4.
  • The Chameleon was DreamWorks' most complex character to animate, with a total of 8,130 controls; extra asset production was handled by Jellyfish Pictures, which had previously worked with DreamWorks on The Bad Guys and The Boss Baby: Family Business.
  • Director Mike Mitchell said the film's fight scenes reflect advances in technology and kung fu and took more influence from anime than earlier films; stunt performers from Marvel films joined production so animators could study their moves for the choreography.
  • Kung Fu Panda 4 and The Wild Robot were the last two films made entirely in-house at DreamWorks Animation, which moved to relying more heavily on outside studios after 2024.
  • The trailer was viewed over 142 million times in its first 24 hours across social media, becoming the most-viewed trailer for a Universal animated film, beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Minions: The Rise of Gru, Sing 2 and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
