Plot summary
Bernie Laplante makes his living as a pickpocket and small-time crook. He pulls survivors from a crashed jet and walks away with the purse of Gale Gayley, a television reporter, leaving one of his shoes behind. When his car breaks down he waves down John Bubber, a homeless veteran of the Vietnam War, who hears the tale of the crash and takes the remaining shoe. Gale's news director Deke offers $1 million for the unknown 'Angel of Flight 104', and Bernie cannot claim it: he has been arrested for fencing credit cards taken from the people he saved. John goes to Gale with the story and the shoe.

- Epic Records asked Mariah Carey to record a song for the soundtrack, but her then-fiancé Tommy Mottola, CEO of Sony Music Entertainment, did not want her tied to a film. She and Walter Afanasieff then wrote "Hero" for Gloria Estefan, before keeping it for her album Music Box with some lyrics rewritten.
- The plane crash was staged in Piru, California, with a derelict Boeing 727 fuselage blown up over a bridge and a recreated river and river bed. The first explosion failed, so a second rigged explosive tore the plane apart to recreate the crash.
