Plot summary
Mr. Hoppy is a retired bachelor who lives in a London flat and tends a balcony garden. He is in love with Mrs. Silver, the widow in the flat below, but she shows her affection to Alfie, the tortoise she keeps as a companion since her husband died. Mr. Hoppy is too shy to tell her how he feels, and he notices that she is upset that Alfie never grows. Mr. Pringle, another resident, is his rival.
