Plot summary
In Havana in 1958, Fico Fellove owns El Trópico, a nightclub, and is devoted to his family and his music. Fulgencio Batista rules Cuba as a dictator. The Fellove household splits over the revolution: Ricardo joins Fidel Castro's rebel army, Luis works with the student opposition, and their father Federico, a university professor, argues for peaceful, constitutional change. Meyer Lansky, a figure in New York's Genovese crime family, asks to open a gambling room at El Trópico, and Fico refuses, wanting the club to remain a place of music.

- Andy García, who immigrated from Cuba to Miami at the start of Fidel Castro's rule, spent 16 years trying to get The Lost City made before it finally became a reality as his personal passion project.
- The film had to be shot in the Dominican Republic standing in for Cuba because Andy García himself was refused entry into Cuba on account of his criticism of Castro.
- According to the film's making-of documentary, Bill Murray's character, The Writer, is really the personality of the movie's author, G. Cabrera Infante. Murray was given latitude to improvise, and the scene near the end in which The Writer and Meyer Lansky discuss egg creams was almost entirely improvised.
