Plot summary
Max Simkin mends shoes in the New York shop his family has kept for generations, work he has no interest in. He lives with Sarah, his ailing mother, and misses his father, Abraham. Jimmy keeps the barbershop next door. Carmen Herrera, an activist, campaigns against realtors tearing down neighborhood buildings for large developments. The local thug Leon Ludlow brings his shoes in to be resoled. When the shop's stitching machine fails, Max switches to the original machine his great-grandfather Pinchas used, and trying on Ludlow's shoes turns him into Ludlow.
