Plot summary
Open Spaces is an environmental group whose local chapter Albert Markovski heads, and its current fight is against a new big-box Huckabees department store. Brad Stand, an executive at Huckabees, joins the group and takes over as its leader, pushing Albert aside, while his live-in girlfriend Dawn Campbell is the chain's public face and voice in its commercials. Albert keeps seeing the same conspicuous stranger, so he contacts Bernard and Vivian Jaffe, a husband-and-wife team of existential detectives who explain their universal interconnectivity philosophy and follow his daily life to help him solve the coincidence. The Jaffes introduce him to another client, Tommy Corn, a fireman critical of the petroleum industry, presenting Tommy as his other.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Videos leaked onto YouTube in March 2007 showing on-set arguments between director David O. Russell and star Lily Tomlin. Asked about them, Tomlin said the film came out as a very free-associative, crazy movie and that Russell was under a tremendous amount of pressure.
- The film's core idea came to David O. Russell in a dream about a female detective who followed him for spiritual and metaphysical reasons rather than criminal ones; because he habitually wrote down his dreams, he immediately recognized it as the story he wanted to make.
