Plot summary
Joe Nast stays in the Cape Ann, Massachusetts, home of Ben and Jojo Floss after their daughter Diana, his fiancée, is killed in a restaurant in 1972. Ben, a realtor whose partner has left, takes Joe into the business as Floss & Son. Joe collects the wedding invitations at the post office, where Bertie Knox helps him find seventy-four of seventy-five and brings the last one to the house that night. At a property fair, Ben pitches developer Mike Mulcahey on redeveloping a town block, which needs every tenant's agreement. Diana's friends come to sort through her belongings, and Jojo objects. Joe feels trapped in the house and seeks out Bertie, whose boyfriend, the bar's owner, is missing in Vietnam.
