Biography

Jack Black is an American actor, comedian, and musician who began acting as a teenager and became known for leading roles in family and comedy films, plus voice work in animated features. Born in Santa Monica, California, he appeared early in The Cable Guy (1996), Mars Attacks! (1996), and Enemy of the State (1998). His breakout came with High Fidelity (2000), leading to Shallow Hal (2001) and Orange County (2002). He earned a Golden Globe nomination for School of Rock (2003), then starred in King Kong (2005), Nacho Libre (2006), and Tropic Thunder (2008). He voices Po in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, starting with Kung Fu Panda (2008). Critics praised his role in Bernie (2011), which brought another Golden Globe nomination. He saw a resurgence with Goosebumps (2015), Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017), and A Minecraft Movie (2025). He also formed the comedy rock duo Tenacious D and has won an Emmy and a Grammy.

First role
Black got his start as an actor in 1982, at age 13, appearing in a TV commercial for the video game Pitfall.
Big break
In 2000, Black appeared in High Fidelity as a wild record store employee working for John Cusack. Black calls that part his breakout into the Hollywood scene.
Getting ready for a role
In Peter Jackson's 2005 remake of King Kong, Black played the obsessed filmmaker Carl Denham, one of the few dramatic roles of his career, and he drew on Orson Welles for that performance.
A first
Black's 34-second song "Steve's Lava Chicken" from A Minecraft Movie became the shortest song ever to land on the Billboard Hot 100.
Behind the camera
Black registered Electric Dynamite Productions, Inc. in August 2006. The company's first production was Branson, a 2009 mockumentary made with BranMo Productions and Perfect Weekend.
Early training
In 1987, Black became a member of the Actors' Gang, a stage company started by UCLA students that included Tim Robbins, and he took part in many stage productions.
