Plot summary
Niki White apprentices under Harry Horowitz, a New York City piano tuner who knew his late father. Niki is a gifted musician, but hyperacusis has stopped him from playing and he wears ear protection against loud noise. After Harry forgets the combination to his own safe, Niki works out how to open it by listening, and finds he has a talent for safe-cracking. Tuning at a conservatory, he meets Ruthie, a student pianist and aspiring composer. When a heart attack puts Harry in the hospital and leaves him facing medical debt, Niki takes up an offer from Uri, the leader of a crew of thieves. Niki joins Uri, Yoni and Benny, whose security company is a cover.
