Plot summary
Billy Behan is a poor Irish American teenager in the Bronx in 1935. He draws the notice of the wealthy mobster Dutch Schultz and takes a place in his organization as a gofer, renaming himself Bathgate after a street in his neighborhood. Schultz is taken with the boy and keeps him close, and Billy starts to look on the gangster as a father figure and on the gang as a way to rise. Facing tax evasion charges in an upstate New York court, Schultz moves his entourage, Billy among them, to the town, where he charms the residents and even fakes a conversion to Catholicism. Drew Preston, Schultz's mistress, travels with the group, and Billy is assigned to watch over her while Schultz attends the trial.
