Plot summary
The tale a father tells his son unfolds in a kingdom where everything and everyone comes to a point. Oblio is the one exception, a boy with a round head and many friends. The count resents that the boy is better liked than his own son, and he says that a head without a point makes Oblio an outlaw. Oblio is exiled from the kingdom, and his faithful dog Arrow goes with him. The two travel on to the Pointless Forest, where they meet a man with three heads, giant bees, a tree that sells leaves, and a good-humored old rock.

- Harry Nilsson described how the idea for The Point! came to him: while on acid he looked at the trees, the little branches and the houses and realized that everything comes to a point, and if it doesn't, then there is a point to it.
- The animated film's framing story has a father telling his son a bedtime story; Dustin Hoffman voiced the father in the first version, but a re-recording became necessary for legal reasons, and the best-known version has Ringo Starr as the father.
