Plot summary
A spacecraft is found on the floor of the Pacific Ocean, its coral growth suggesting it has lain there for three hundred years. The psychiatrist Dr. Norman Goodman is called from San Diego to join Captain Harold C. Barnes, the biochemist Dr. Beth Halperin, the mathematician Dr. Harry Adams and the astrophysicist Dr. Ted Fielding at the Habitat, an underwater station near the wreck. Inside the craft the team finds American engineering far ahead of its own time, and logs that point to a long-dead crew sent to collect something. In the cargo bay floats a large, perfectly smooth sphere that no instrument can penetrate; it reflects everything in the room except the people watching it.

- Budgetary concerns halted pre-production on Sphere in October 1996 and forced a script rewrite; with the film on hold, director Barry Levinson made Wag the Dog instead, which reunited him with Dustin Hoffman.
- Barry Levinson said a review of Sphere in Entertainment Weekly inspired him to write the basic plot line for his subsequent film, Liberty Heights.
