David Carradine
Biography
David Carradine was an American actor and director, born in Hollywood in 1936 into a family of actors. He got his break on Broadway in The Royal Hunt of the Sun, playing Atahuallpa, which won him a Theatre World Award. He became known for B movies and martial arts roles, including Boxcar Bertha (1972), Death Race 2000 (1975), Deathsport (1978), and Lone Wolf McQuade (1983). His portrayal of Woody Guthrie in Bound for Glory (1976) earned critical praise, a National Board of Review Award, and a Golden Globe nomination. On television he starred as Kwai Chang Caine in Kung Fu (1972 to 1975), earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, and later headlined Kung Fu: The Legend Continues (1993 to 1997). His career revived with Quentin Tarantino's Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Volume 2 (2004), winning him a Saturn Award and another Golden Globe nomination. He received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 1997 and died in 2009.

Getting ready for a role
Carradine knew nothing about kung fu when he was cast as Kwai Chang Caine in Kung Fu, so he relied on his dance experience for the role and later studied martial arts, becoming an evangelist of the practice.
A role that slipped away
Carradine was offered the role of Frankenstein in Death Race 2000 after Peter Fonda turned it down, and he accepted it to kill his Kung Fu image and launch a movie career.
Beyond film
Carradine released an album called Grasshopper in 1975. He also wrote and sang the theme songs for Americana and Sonny Boy, two films he appeared in.
