Plot summary
In late nineteenth-century Montana, Rebecca Yoder and her son Benjo keep a sheep farm alone after the death of her husband Ben, who was killed in a dispute with henchmen of the cattle baron Fergus Hunter. Rebecca and Benjo belong to the Plain People, a religious community that resembles the Amish; Benjo, who found his father dead, has all but stopped speaking, and the sheriff refuses to act against Hunter's men. One winter day a wounded man staggers through the snow and collapses before them. Rebecca drags him inside and begins disarming him, alarmed by how many guns he carries, while Benjo runs to town for Doctor Lucas Henry. The man is Johnny Gault, an outlaw, and sheltering him sets her congregation against her, while Hunter wants the community's land.
