Plot summary
Archibald Holden Buster Williams, called Archie, is a high schooler in an upper-middle-class suburb who tells his film teacher that his final project will be his own suicide on camera. School policy sends him to the counselor Mrs. Ellis, then into police custody, handcuffed outside while classmates watch, including Sierra Silver, his crush. His mother Gretchen and father Daryl arrive and fail to persuade the sheriff to release him. A 72-hour psychiatric hold follows. Back at school, peers respond with concern, support, outrage and rumors; some share their own struggles and a religious club holds a prayer circle for him. Bullies take his camera, and Sierra gets it back and requests an interview for the school paper. Archie befriends Corey, who relates to his disillusionment, and returns to therapy with Gafur Chandrasakar, bonding over cinema.
