Plot summary

The 27th Panzers, a German tank regiment, gathers convicted soldiers from penal battalions in 1943. The crew takes on Porta, Tiny, Stege, Old Man and Sven. A woman begs them to rescue her baby from a bombed building; the baby is her cat. The men are then sent to the Russian Front, where they crew the assault guns Bertha I and Bertha II against Soviet T-34s. After an escapade at a field brothel, their colonel promises promotion out of the penal unit and furloughs to whoever destroys a train hauling oil tankers deep behind enemy lines. A fanatical Nazi intelligence officer joins the squad for the mission.
