Plot summary
A thousand years past the Neutron Wars, people live in scattered city-states, and only mutants and independent warriors called Range Guides survive in the deserts between them. Lord Zirpola rules Helix and prepares a war against Tritan over fuel. To demonstrate his new weapons, laser-armed dirt bikes called Death Machines, he stages Deathsport, in which criminals ride for their freedom in place of execution. Zirpola holds Kaz Oshay, a famous Range Guide, and wants a female Range Guide for an upcoming event. Deneer, another Range Guide, is seized while she leads Tritans across open desert, and during that attack a child named Tara is carried off by mutants. Kaz and Deneer meet in a Helix prison, where they agree to break out together.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Deathsport (1978)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Nicholas Niciphor said he and two stuntmen physically removed Claudia Jennings from a motorcycle when he realized she was drunk and apparently high on cocaine. In a 1991 letter he also admitted that David Carradine assaulted him several times, once breaking his nose and sending him to the hospital.
- David Carradine said Niciphor's direction seemed to him to consist mainly of "hysteria and episodic tantrums," and claimed that Niciphor physically attacked Claudia Jennings, so Carradine beat him up in response.
- David Carradine wrote in his memoirs that when the time came to shoot a sex scene between him and Claudia Jennings, director Nicholas Niciphor said he had not been with a woman in six months, could not be in a room with a naked Jennings, and asked Carradine to direct the scene himself.
- Carradine said extra scenes were shot of Claudia Jennings being tortured while naked because producer Roger Corman felt the film did not have enough nudity.
- Director Nicholas Niciphor said shooting became "hell" from the third day, blaming a too-ambitious script, a too-tight schedule and a cast and crew "largely sodden with drugs."
- Corman asked Nicholas Niciphor to come back weeks later for extra scenes, but Niciphor refused because he did not want to work with David Carradine again. Carradine claimed the refusal was because the scenes involved explosions and Niciphor had PTSD from serving in the Vietnam War.
