Plot summary
Soleil is a police state of the future where crime has been eliminated and society is split into classes. Bone works as a security guard at a cryogenics facility, but he loses the job after failing to show proper respect to authority. Helen is held at a government brothel and forced into prostitution. The two meet, feel an immediate attraction and begin a relationship they must keep hidden, since unauthorized romance is barred to lower-class subgrade citizens. Creon, a friend of Bone, grows jealous and insists that Bone share Helen with him. Bone refuses, and the two men come to blows. After Bone and Helen steal money from a supermarket, Jason approaches them and offers to smuggle them to Frodan, a nation at war with Soleil, if they steal records from a building disguised as a hospital.
