Plot summary
The USS Neptune is a nuclear submarine on the surface and returning to port through heavy fog when a Norwegian freighter bound for New York strikes it off the coast of Connecticut. The engine room floods, the main propulsion fails, and the boat comes to rest on a canyon ledge about 1,450 feet down. Captain Paul Blanchard, an aging and respected officer aboard for his last tour before he takes command of a submarine squadron, is among the crew trapped in the wreck. A Navy rescue force under Captain Hal Bennett arrives above the site to attempt a dangerous rescue of the crew.
