Plot summary
A window cleaner is killed outside a New York high-rise office, and Detective Shepard and Sergeant Powell cannot explain the death. Around the same time, Powell looks into a body found skinned, and something winged snatches a sunbather from a rooftop. Jimmy Quinn, an ex-convict and recovering addict who wants work as a jazz pianist, takes a job driving for a gang of robbers instead. The jewelry store robbery goes wrong; a truck hits him and his bag of money spills into the street. Limping to the Chrysler Building, he finds his lawyer's door locked, sets off an alarm, and climbs the spire, where an enormous egg sits in a nest beside a bloody skeleton. Shepard, meanwhile, hears a museum curator describe the Aztec sacrifices made to the winged serpent god Quetzalcoatl.

- Michael Moriarty's character Jimmy Quinn was not a failed piano player in the script. Writer-director Larry Cohen added a scene in which Quinn auditions and fails to get a job after discovering that Moriarty himself wrote and played music.
- The owners of New York's Chrysler Building initially refused to secure the building for the film, then agreed after being offered an $18,000 fee. The interior of the building's tower crown was used as a primary location.
