Biography

Charles Dance is an English actor who started on stage before moving into film and television. Born in Redditch in 1946, he joined the Royal Shakespeare Company and later returned to play Coriolanus in 1989 and 1990. His feature film debut came with For Your Eyes Only (1981), a James Bond film. Often cast as intimidating, authoritarian antagonists, he appeared in films such as Michael Collins (1996), Gosford Park (2001), The Imitation Game (2014), Dracula Untold (2014), Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019), Mank (2020), and The King's Man (2021). His television roles included The Jewel in the Crown (1984), where he was Guy Perron, Bleak House (2005) as Mr Tulkinghorn, Game of Thrones (2011 to 2015) as Tywin Lannister, and The Crown (2019 to 2020) as Lord Mountbatten, earning Emmy nominations for Bleak House and The Crown. He also wrote and directed Ladies in Lavender (2004) and was appointed an OBE in 2006.

    Charles Dance's first screen role came in 1974, when he played Commandant Neil O'Brien in an episode of the ITV series Father Brown called The Secret Garden.

    Dance's big break came when he played Guy Perron in The Jewel in the Crown, Granada Television's 1984 adaptation of Paul Scott's novels. The production also turned Geraldine James and Art Malik into stars.

    Dance turned down the chance to screen test for the role of James Bond, though in 1989 he played Bond's creator Ian Fleming in the Anglia Television drama Goldeneye.

    Dance was wooed by the producers to play Tywin Lannister in HBO's Game of Thrones while he was filming Your Highness in Belfast.

    Charles Dance made his first film as both writer and director with Ladies in Lavender in 2004. Judi Dench and Maggie Smith starred in it.
