Plot summary
Justin lives in Gabylonia, where the king's death led to knights being outlawed and replaced by lawyers. His father Reginald, the queen's chief lawyer, insists that Justin study law, but Justin wishes to follow his grandfather Sir Roland into knighthood. When Roland's sword disappears, Justin decides to search for it. His grandmother Lilly sends him to the Tower of Wisdom for training. Before leaving, he visits Lara, a nobleman's daughter he admires, and she gives him a dirty sock as a token; he promises to return it. At the Broken Eagle Inn, now a fast-food restaurant, he meets barmaid Talia and a talentless wizard named Melquiades.
