Plot summary
Archive material and new aerial footage of surviving Spitfires, shot above the Dover cliffs and over southern England, frame an account of the aircraft and the people who flew it. The design traces back to a Supermarine seaplane by R. J. Mitchell that took the 1931 Schneider Trophy; Joseph Smith became chief designer after Mitchell died in 1937. The film follows the plane's changing forms and duties across the Battle of Britain, the Normandy landings and the Siege of Malta, and it hears from veterans of the fighter squadrons and the air auxiliaries, from museum curators and from pilots who fly Spitfires today.
