Plot summary
In 1657, while Oliver Cromwell rules England, John Lye rules a small farm in Shropshire. He is authoritarian, puritan and abusive, and he shares the farm with his wife Fanny and their son Arthur. One day a young couple, Thomas Ashbury and Rebecca Henshaw, are found on the property. They are naked and bruised, and they claim they were robbed and need somewhere to stay. John allows them to stay, though he does so reluctantly. Thomas speaks of sexual and moral freedom, and he and Rebecca start influencing Fanny to indulge. A sheriff and a constable come looking for Thomas and Rebecca, saying the two are dangerous heretics.
