Plot summary
Josemaría Escrivá is a Roman Catholic priest, the founder of Opus Dei, and a candidate for canonization. The journalist Roberto Torres is researching the priest's life. Roberto was rejected long ago by his father Manolo, who is now aged and dying. Manolo became a soldier in the Spanish Civil War, and he and Escrivá had a complicated friendship that began in childhood.

- Roland Joffe turned the film down at first and only agreed to direct after watching a video of Josemaria Escriva telling a Jewish girl not to convert to Catholicism because it would disrespect her parents. He signed on demanding he write a new screenplay from scratch and become a producer.
- A Writers Guild of America credit arbitration ruled that Roland Joffe's screenplay was completely original and bore no relationship to the earlier script by Barbara Nicolosi, giving him the sole "Written by" credit, the highest writing credit available.
