Plot summary
In the Warsaw ghetto in 1943, during World War II, Rabbi Adam Heller struggles to keep his family together, and his children Rachel and Paul are part of that family. A German officer, Captain Richter, is in the ghetto. The ghetto's orphans have a rebellion, led by Israel. The rabbi's effort to hold his family together leads him to a crisis of faith.
