Plot summary
Sarah Morton writes detective novels in London and cannot get her next one started. John Bosload, her publisher, offers her the use of his country house near Lacoste, in the south of France, and she accepts. She settles in and meets Marcel, the groundskeeper. Late one night a young woman named Julie turns up, saying she is taking time off work and that John is her father. Julie explains that her mother was John's mistress and that he would not leave his family. Julie brings men home at night, and a rivalry grows between the two women.
