Plot summary
Ellen Ripley is in cryonic stasis aboard the Sulaco, the Colonial Marine ship carrying her home to Earth, along with Rebecca "Newt" Jorden, Corporal Hicks and the damaged android Bishop. An egg hatches on board and a facehugger attacks; a fire starts, and the ship ejects an escape pod. The pod crashes on Fiorina "Fury" 161, a maximum-security correctional facility and foundry populated by male inmates, and an alien organism has come down with it. Clemens, the prison's medical officer, wakes Ripley and tells her she is the sole survivor.

- Michael Biehn, who was not asked for permission to use his likeness, demanded and received almost as much money for one archival picture of him in Alien 3 as he had been paid for his entire role in Aliens.

20th Century Fox asked for an ending in which Ripley survived, but Sigourney Weaver agreed to Alien 3 only on condition that her character died.- Filming on Alien 3 began on January 14, 1991, at Pinewood Studios with no finished script, and $7 million had already been spent.
- Vincent Ward was dismissed from directing Alien 3 after refusing the list of changes Fox demanded, and the finished film's main plot still follows the structure of his pitch.
- Fincher suggested dressing a Whippet dog in an alien costume to film the quadrupedal alien, but the visual effects team found the result comical and dropped the idea in favour of the puppet.
- David Fincher wanted the Alien to be "more of a puma, or a beast", so original designer H. R. Giger was contacted and sketched longer, thinner legs and a sharp tongue in place of the secondary jaws.
- Elliot Goldenthal spent a year composing Alien 3's score, which was recorded during the 1992 Los Angeles riots and which he said contributed to its disturbing nature.
- David Fincher wanted Gary Oldman to star in Alien 3, but the director and actor could not work it out.
