Plot summary
The Bonanno family of Tuscany has produced artisans and church restorers for generations. By 1911 Nicola and Andrea, two of its sons, are without work and see few prospects at home, so they sail for the United States. There they take whatever precarious jobs they can find, settling for a time in San Francisco's Italian immigrant neighborhood. Their craft and a measure of luck bring them to the attention of D. W. Griffith, busy preparing his historical epic Intolerance; he wants Italian-born set designers, and the brothers join the crew building its Babylonian setpieces. Two young extras, Edna and Mabel, catch their eye.
