Plot summary
In 1908, the Greek island of Nisi lies under Ottoman rule, and Turkish officials, Greek rebels and German emissaries compete for the upper hand there. Basil Pascali, half British and half Maltese, has lived on Nisi for twenty years, sending the Sultan reports about suspicious activity; no reply ever comes, yet his payment keeps arriving, so he carries on. His suspicions wake when Anthony Bowles, a British archaeologist, takes a room at the hotel with a purpose that is not clear. Pascali befriends him in the lounge bar and offers to serve as his interpreter, and he introduces Bowles to Lydia Neuman, an Austrian painter on the island. Bowles wants land leased from the local Pasha, and the Turkish authorities let Pascali know that a failure to pay in full will fall on him.
