Plot summary
Brian Jackson has watched University Challenge since childhood, and in 1985 he arrives at the University of Bristol as a scholarship student who reads for the pleasure of knowing things. At a party he meets Rebecca, a left-wing student whose politics and quick wit he admires. He tries out for the Bristol team that appears on the quiz show, and he helps Alice, a drama student, with the qualifying test. Alice sees him as a friend while he works to get closer to her, and when a place on the team opens up he joins a squad captained by Patrick, a postgraduate in mechanical engineering, alongside Lucy, an American medical student from Minneapolis. Alice invites him to her family's Suffolk cottage for New Year's Eve.

- Although set at Bristol University, the main quad and Gustave Tuck lecture theater of University College London were used as sets, and the Granada TV studios are really the back of BBC Television Centre: a corridor leading to the multi-story car park, transformed for a day in 2005 with a Granada logo and pictures of past stars.
