Plot summary
Susan Traherne is a British woman who serves as a courier during World War II. In 1943 she is in a French wood, waiting as a message is due to arrive by parachute. Lazar, another British agent, parachutes in after his aircraft has trouble. The two flee from German soldiers and spend a night together; Susan confides in him. Lazar departs at dawn after a warning on his wireless, leaving her a pair of cufflinks. When the war ends, Susan goes back to England and finds work as a clerk, sharing a home with her friend Alice. Peacetime strikes her as trivial and insufficient. She resolves to shape the life she desires and pays no heed to the people around her.
