Plot summary
In 1857, a Royal Danish Navy ship bound for the North Pole is trapped in ice and takes aboard a gravely injured Victor Frankenstein, who tells the crew how he came to create the being pursuing him. Victor is the son of an aristocratic family, a brilliant and arrogant surgeon who resents his abusive father. Expelled by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh for trying to reanimate corpses, he accepts money and an isolated tower from the arms merchant Henrich Harlander. Victor builds a body from criminals and from soldiers killed in the Crimean War, and lightning strikes it as planned. The following morning the creature is alive, immensely strong and quick to heal, and Victor can teach it only one word: his own name.

- Jacob Elordi replaced Andrew Garfield as the Creature because of scheduling conflicts caused by the SAG-AFTRA strikes; Elordi got the part after a hair stylist who worked with him on Priscilla recommended him, and del Toro scrapped nine months of Creature designs made for Garfield, leaving nine weeks to redesign for the taller Elordi.
- Guillermo del Toro first developed his Frankenstein at Universal Pictures, casting frequent collaborator Doug Jones as the Creature, but Universal shelved it over its planned Dark Universe franchise; Netflix revived the project in 2023 with Jacob Elordi instead playing the Creature.
