Plot summary
Lou Clark works at a small-town English cafe and lives with her parents, her sister Treena, Treena's son and her grandfather; with her father out of work, the household depends on the wages of the two sisters. When the cafe closes, Lou takes a six-month job as caregiver and companion to a disabled man at a castle. Camilla Traynor hires her despite her lack of experience, and Lou finds that the man is Camilla's son Will, tetraplegic since a road accident two years earlier. Will is bitter and sarcastic, and a nurse, Nathan, handles his physical care while Lou keeps him company. Lou wants to quit, but Treena, who plans to return to college, asks her to stay.

SPOILER
The film's story of a disabled man choosing assisted death set off real protests from disability-rights activists, who argued it sent the message that disabled people are better off dead; campaigners picketed the London premiere at the Curzon Mayfair over its depiction of disability and its assisted-dying plot.SPOILER
Author Jojo Moyes said she drew the story partly from her own family, where relatives needed round-the-clock care, and from a real news report about a quadriplegic man who talked his parents into taking him to a center for assisted suicide.
